while watching one of my resident coopers hawks destroy my last green heron today, it occurred to me this isn't all good. cooper's were once an uncommon migrant in these parts, and a thrill to see. having them around all the time has been a disaster for the bird life at my farm, no longer do i see gallinules, spot breasted orioles, marsh rabbits, cardinals or, going back a year or two, anis. i had always suspected wilma as the culprit. is it possible the explosion of collared doves, which the coopers just love, has provided an easy food source, allowing the coopers to move back in to south florida full time, to the detriment of many other types of birds? i'm less than a mile from the airport ani spot. could this be why they are declining so fast? were we better off with coopers, like crocs and panthers, being just a little on the rare side. just a thought, kurt d.
