I believe your theory is correct. In Pinellas County the first ever Cooper's Hawk nest was discovered in 1997. Never before had the species been recorded as nesting here.

Now ten years later I would conservatively say there are at least ten pairs, probably more, nesting Cooper's in Pinellas. They are relatively easy to see anywhere in the county from May thru July - and of course the rest of the year, too. ( Pinellas is the most densely populated county in the state with just over 1 million residents. )

Eurasian Collared-Doves are abundant, as are Monk and Black-hooded Parakeets. Personally, I have seen one take a Monk from off my back yard feeder, and also have seen one take a Black-hooded at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve.

Life is tough for a bird living in the territory of a Cooper's.
