I think time of year plays the biggest role in vagrancy. Spring and Fall seem to turn up the most birds but that's not to say summer and winter dont produce rarities. Overshoots during migration and post-breeding dispersal are probably the biggest reasons but when you look at La Sagra's Flycatchers they seem to migrate here on purpose. Either way the only tried and true fashion to find a vagrant is to get out there and look. Good luck!
