Be very cautious, Jeanette. Its very likely that the bees in the owl box are Africanized. I'd recommend having a professional exterminator remove them. Bill Kern, an entomologist from UF has been working on the problem of bees in nesting boxes. He recommends spraying the inside to half of the boxes with permethrin to exclude bees. It has virtually no toxicity to birds, so it is safe to use.
