This morning, I saw my first-ever Bachman's Sparrow in Palm Beach County. It was singing along Stumper's Grade in J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area, in pine flatwood habitat about a mile west of the Everglades Youth Conservation Camp. It was the only bird of note seen while driving through the WMA. This was probably my southern-most Bachman's ever, but not by much, since Babcock-Webb WMA in Charlotte County, where I've seen them in the past, is at almost the same latitude.
I spent most of the morning in adjacent DuPuis Management Area in Martin County. I wanted to visit the location where Red-cockaded Woodpeckers have been re-introduced; I found it along the east side of the auto tour road between stops 5 and 6. Unfortunately, no RCWs were seen, nor were any heard during my visit. Species seen included Northern Bobwhite, Wood Stork, Swallow-tailed Kite, Common Nighthawk, Northern Flicker, Downy Woodpecker, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Eastern Towhee and Eastern Meadowlark. Heard-only birds included Great Crested Flycatcher and Pine Warbler.
After lunch, I stopped at Green Cay Wetlands. Among the birds added to my day list were Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, Least Bittern and Limpkin.
