While working in South Florida for a short while, Alex Wang from WA, stopped by Cape Florida and Crandon Park on 16 December. He photographed an ani in Crandon Gardens and sent me the photo yesterday (12/29). It's a Groove-billed Ani, with the field marks clearly seen in his photo. The bill is smaller than Smooth-billed, has grooves and the culmen doesn't continue into the crest area. I made a quick stop this afternoon but didn't see or hear it.
Directions: Enter Rickenbacker Causeway (toll) from I-95 and continue toward the Village of Key Biscayne. Turn into the South Entrance of Crandon Park (fee) and park as far south as possible. Crandon Gardens is directly south of the parking area. The main gate is locked but the one slightly to the east is open. Alex photographed the bird on the east side of the pond closest closest to the main gate.
