An interesting mix of migrants at Jimbo's in Virginia Key this morning (Monday): About 300 swallows and martins fed over the site. Large numbers of Barn Swallows have been moving over the Key in the past 4 days with just a few Bank and Northern Rough-Winged. Today was a fairly even mix of Purple Martins, Barn, & Northern Rough-winged Swallows. I picked out 2 Cliff and several Bank Swallows, but I am sure there were more. There were 5 perched Ospreys as well as 3 soaring. Several Belted Kingfishers were at the tip of Jimbo's. Bobolinks started flying over at 9:30 and numbers steadily increased.
Two very interesting sightings (both firsts for me at Jimbo's): A single Swallow-tailed Kite flew south over the park and 5 Glossy (!!) Ibis flew over the Marina, circled Jimbo's and headed southwest. [Another first on Saturday: 2 Loggerhead Shrikes that Lady Sambuca and I saw in south parking area.]
Hardly any little guys: Just parula, redstart and Northern Waterthrush.
After re-checking my records for Virginia Beach, I found a sighting of Loggerhead Shrike from 1999. The great Ornithologist Dr. Yacey Baez has 2 previous records of Swallow-tailed Kite. The Glossy Ibis today seem to be new for Virginia Key.
Good times at Jimbo's!! Great specials. Check it out! Excellent bird sightings.
