Not so fast. State purchase means in six years it will no longer be in agriculture, which means the fields will not be regularly plowed, cleared, and flooded with shallow water. AS birders, that means we will lose 200,000 acres of shorefird habitat that will become nothing more than sprawling sawgrass and cattail marsh. This may be a plus for the Everglades to some, but it is a negative to birding, as we will lose a very scarce type of habitat for a huge number of migratory shorebirds. As always, everyone seems to forget that shorebirds exist. Let's provide more habitat for egrets and herons; screw the shorebirds. We have several million acres of Everglades habitat out there, but where do we go to see birds: farms. Figure that out.
