Shorebirds use short hydroperiod wetlands, moist fields, and grasslands. Most STA's are too deep for shorebirds, as is most of the Everglades proper. This alternative is way better than a huge developmeht, but development on such low-lying land is probably extremely difficult, costly, and at times almost impossible. However, operational sod farms and rice fields provide a stopover habitat for shorebirds that otherwise would not have such habitat available in Sout Florida. I say, hurray for agriculture; let's keep as much of it as we can.
