A family relative reports to me that two more sightings of the elusive and suspected extinct ivory billed woodpecker have surfaced in south Carolia. Truly exciting news but how often have we been down this road? But even more exciting is the yet unconfirmed report that an actual photograph may soon be available. The picture of the ivory billed was taken in the Florida Panhandle, an area that has been extensively searched over the previous 5 years. It may well prove to be a success and then the turmoil begins with private landowners in dispute with science.

This new information supercedes the news of three months past. But it is heartwarming and encouraging to see the extent that people will go to in order to correct past mistakes and make things right with nature. Hopefully private ownership, science and exploitation can reach an accord. For me, it would be enough to see the picture or better yet, talk with a trust worthy person who has finally glimpsed this bird.

Ornithology has succeeded with the Condor. Perhaps it can repeat the story line.
