Mystery Duck at ECO Pond

Paul asked me to post this photo of an unidentified duck he photographed at ECO Pond. The head and shape looks like a Lesser Scaup to me, but the bill color is wrong... What do you thing?

"The bird was very solitary swimming away from other ducks and grebes. It dove rapidly, often, and stayed under long. The dive was much like a grebe. The beak showed black in the binoculars, the digital and my film pictures (yet to be processed). I have some 45 degree and broadside pictures I believe. The color was truly "nondescript." The only telltale coloration was the buff at the front. There was no white ring on the beak. There was no call, no flight. This bird stayed smack in the middle of eco-pond."

I can't stand "unknowns." - Paul
