It was a cool Saturday morning at the Chekika Unit of Everglades National Park in more ways than one. After entering the Everglades through the Richmond Drive entrance, I headed west all the way to the T-intersection. I made a left and drove south all the way to a metal gate that will be on your left. I parked the car here.
I walked east before first light on the closed road all the way to a 4-way intersection. From this point east to the where the pavement ends, there is rich habitat for wintering sparrows and buntings.
On this morning, I had multiple White-crowned, Lincoln's, Swamp, and Grasshopper Sparrows. However, the real highlight of the morning was a Dickcissel associating with a small flock of Indigo Buntings about 200-300m east of the 4-way intersection.
