Chekika is just the old Grossman Hammock. That's why there is (or was) a sign pointing right at the T for Chekika, and a further sign at the Chekika entrance. That should be clear enough.
I'm not sure exactly where you were. I gather you went east from 232 Ave, maybe from the (former?) recharge area. I think the recharge area belongs to the South Florida Water Management District, not the park, and that points east are not in the park.
Incidentally, 232 Ave. near and south of the recharge area has always been good for sparrows, as have the former farm fields to the east.
