John:
It was always my understanding that the Richmond Drive entrance was the "Chekika Unit" of Everglades National Park. This includes the old (closed) Chekika Campground as well as the north/south avenue.
I checked Google maps. The 4-way intersection I describe is right on the boundary between Everglades National Park, and what I assume to be South Florida Water Management District land.
The purpose of the report was to give specific directions to a productive site for wintering sparrows and cardinalids (especially for a rare one such as Dickcissel). By exploring areas away from traditional sites, we gain better understanding of the distribution of wintering passerines in Miami-Dade.
This site apparently needs a name.
