Work on Saturday and Sunday mornings kept me watching the blitz unfold from afar, but this morning I was able to get out of bed after a late night before and check out one of my favorite haunts in North Miami. I walked from the main parking lot to the shrubby areas around the horse stables, the playground area, then finally cross the small bridge and bird the path on the east side of the park. As usual, most of the songbirds were between the southwestern corner of horse stables and the playground.
The highlight of the morning was a Swainson's Warbler just across the bridge over the canal. After crossing the bridge, continue forward past the small clearing and enter the hammock. The bird was on the right associating with an Ovenbird.

Swainson's Warbler 1 Very rare in winter months but a annual passage migrant at this location. Loosely associating with an Ovenbird. Observed for 2+ minutes as it tossed leaf litter and hopped on ground. Thick bill, broad and slightly cream-colored supercilium, rusty and thick eye line and crown. Brown back and clean white-cream colored breast (with no streaking). The bird was documented on an iphone. Video and video-grabs are available.
