Yes, the berry crop is crucial. But if the winter berries have always been abundant, then there is the question of why the Robins have only relatively lately begun wintering there; and if the berries have only become abundant in recent years, then climate change could have something to do with the increased yield of berries, and thus the presence of the Robins.

On the subject of birds' cold tolerance, I remember reading about a study in which American Goldfinch were OK down to -94 F as long as they had plenty of food.
