Your post rather exaggerates the rarity of Chestnut-sided Warbler in winter. Don t be confused by the term record which means photo or specimen.
Winter Chestnut-sided Warbler reports from FFN between 1992 and 2009 (averaging 1 in Florida every 3 years).
1 on the Tallahassee CBC 1 Jan 1993 (J. Cox, K. NeSmith).
1 at S Jacksonville 3 Dec 1998-EOS 1999 (J. Cocke)
1 female at Royal Palm, ENP-E 5-6 Jan 2002 (J. Boyd et al.)
1 at Birch SP 12 Jan-EOS 2002 (W. George, J. Boyd et al.)
1 at Loxahatchee NWR 1 Jan 2005 (B. Hope)
1 at Bystre Lake 12 Feb 2008 (J. Hintermister)
As for the wintering warblers, I don t see the evidence for an increase in numbers. If there is an increase in numbers, a warmer climate would certainly be a possible reason. Alhought it s not much warmer, it doesn t take much to have more winter insects. Keep in mind that availability of food is a major driver of both migration and winter bird movements, and that it is only loosely related to climate. If you had birded through a northern winter or two, you would have seen clearly that food availability is a lot more important than temperature.
