Hi Joel.
First, thanks for the tip. I do see your report at Loxahatchee at 5:45. I know exactly the Oak tree area you are referring to. I have never seen one there. I have seen Yellow-bellied and Downy woodpecker only. You mentioned that you saw one Hairy there in your repot - do you remember the behavior and how long you observed the bird? Did the bird make any sounds?

So, I do see your report (thanks for the correction).
I also need to acknowledge Larry Manfredi's record on the Hairy on 10-15-07 at Bill Baggs (1st record for the park).
Now that I'm "seasoned" with Hairy Woodpecker's behaviors I anticipate finding another one in less than a few years from now. I can't speak for SW Florida since I am not familiar with that territory but judging by the few reports and records this bird is RARE in SE Florida (granted that different folks may have different definitions for the word "rare").
