Lesser Nighthawks at Lucky Hammock

The Lesser Nighthawks that wintered last year in the Lucky Hammock area just north of the main entrance of Everglades National Park have returned. This evening at about 5:40 PM a few nighthawks appeared over the tree line to the southwest of the hammock and a few minutes later at least a dozen could be seen in flight, silhouetted against the afterglow. They began flying over the fields in front of the trees and at about 6:00 PM a few flew past the hammock close enough to be identified.
