This is my first winter down here and I'm still figuring out what's expected and what's unusual. There are still a few Common Nighthawks around Homestead - I hear them almost every night. I realize that Lessers are quieter in general, but do they ever call here in the winter, or do we have to make visual IDs on those guys?

In other news, I had a couple of Sedge Wrens two glades east of the Long Pine Key campground last week while training a co-worker for our winter bird surveys in the park. In this session we learned that you can't hear calling Sedge Wrens from more than 60 meters away. In case anyone cared...

: The Lesser Nighthawks that wintered last year in the Lucky Hammock area just north of the main entrance of Everglades National Park have returned. This evening at about 5:40 PM a few nighthawks appeared over the tree line to the southwest of the hammock and a few minutes later at least a dozen could be seen in flight, silhouetted against the afterglow. They began flying over the fields in front of the trees and at about 6:00 PM a few flew past the hammock close enough to be identified.
