Bat

I know the this Board is for the birds but I was curious if anyone knows something about bats. Last night in Coral Gables (just north of Miracle Mile on Ponce) I spotted a very large, dark solitary bat. It was very fast, flew over the buildings, and spotted it again some 15 seconds later. I have never seen bats in Miami before but have seen plenty of them in Latin America so I am familiar with them. It was pretty big for a bat. Was just wondering what species it could be. A friend who was with me at first thought it was a pigeon (he is no bird watcher) but was convinced it was a bat when we saw it again the second time. Would appreciate any help. Thanks
