Based on its size, it sounds like it could have been an eastern mastiff bat (Eumops, as I recall), as Bob Kelley noted. They were once familiar in Coral Gables and downtown Miami, and they habitually roosted under roofing tiles. I remember reading that one was found a few years ago on a Coral Gables sidewalk, well after they were thought to be extirpated. It was weak and appeared ill, then delivered a stillborn baby bat and flew off. Let's hope we still have a few with us.

: I know the this Board is for the birds but I was curious if anyone knows something about bats. Last night in Coral Gables (just north of Miracle Mile on Ponce) I spotted a very large, dark solitary bat. It was very fast, flew over the buildings, and spotted it again some 15 seconds later. I have never seen bats in Miami before but have seen plenty of them in Latin America so I am familiar with them. It was pretty big for a bat. Was just wondering what species it could be. A friend who was with me at first thought it was a pigeon (he is no bird watcher) but was convinced it was a bat when we saw it again the second time. Would appreciate any help. Thanks
