It sounds like it might have been a mastiff bat. They occur in that area. We also have evening bats and free-tailed bats in the area.
There are more in the Big Cypress Preserve(look along the loop road) plusa small group of fruit eating bats in Key West. Ted Fleming at UM is now doing a study of the bats of the Bahamas.

: I know the this Board is for the birds but I was curious if anyone knows something about bats. Last night in Coral Gables (just north of Miracle Mile on Ponce) I spotted a very large, dark solitary bat. It was very fast, flew over the buildings, and spotted it again some 15 seconds later. I have never seen bats in Miami before but have seen plenty of them in Latin America so I am familiar with them. It was pretty big for a bat. Was just wondering what species it could be. A friend who was with me at first thought it was a pigeon (he is no bird watcher) but was convinced it was a bat when we saw it again the second time. Would appreciate any help. Thanks
