I lived in Miami for 30 years, now Broward County, and in all that time I had never seen one bat down here. Didn't even think they existed in South Florida. That was probably due to the fact that i lived in sprawling suburbia. but now that I see them I know it is not true. During the summer months, we see very small bats in the evening in Miami Lakes. Unfortunately, I do not know thetype or where they go during the winter. Possibly they stay in the area but are less active. maybe someone out there has more info.

As for the fruit eating bats in Key West, are you referring to flying foxes? If so, that is a sight I would love to see! and, it wouldn't require a trip half way around the world. Any idea the size of the colony or where I could get a look? That is, if you do not mind divulging the information.
