This past Monday evening, I was hanging out with my son. We had dinner together and then I asked him if he would come with me to this small scrub land area in Boynton Beach (Rosemary Scrub Area on Seacrest Rd.) and he said: "yes, dad." Not to excited but oh, well. We got there and went for a walk around the area. Not much as far as birds especially in a dry scrubland area with no water in the summer. We saw one Coopers' Hawk flying overhead towards west and one Red-bellied on top of a snag. The surprise was yet to come when we exited the place. I heard a little chirp and it sounded to me like a Common Yellowthroat call. I looked and looked until I spotted the little one. The lighting was already not so good. Almost 7:40 pm. I took a few shots and back then I was thinking it was an unique male Common Yellowthroat. This afternoon while uploading my photos to my computer I thought the bird looked like something i had seen in books before. I began connecting the dots. Did not wanted any false alarms on TAS or ASE so I hesitated writing anything before I did some extensive research. Eureka! It is a Yellow-faced Grassquit...a Lifer for me! I know people in Miami-Dade is used to see a couple per year. Anyway, the bird was on the ground (grassy area) where it was eating some black seeds from a grass stem. It then flew north towards some Oak trees in a distance and never seen again. I wanted to contain the excitement. I went back there today about the same time to see if the bird was still there but I regret to inform that it was not. It doesn't mean that it won'c come back. If you are thinking about visiting this place you take I95 North to Gateway Blvd. Go right (east) to Seacrest and turn left (North). Go a 1/5 of a mile and the tiny Rosemary scrub land area is on your left. They only have spots for 5 cars. The neighborhood is not the prettiest. There is a link to the site below: I am placing a photo to prove what I saw. I was not in the Bahamas:) Some folks know what I am talking about...
