More updates from this past weekend in some of the Palm Beach county birding spots. Saturday I visited Wellington Preserve for the first time, and got a few first-sightings for me. Sightings there included limpkin (8), osprey (6), snail kites (4), lesser scaup (5), caspian terns (8-10), yellow rumped warbler, palm warbler, pine warbler, prairie warbler all in large number, including one possible western palm warbler variant, loggerhead shrike (3), savannah sparrow (1), belted kingfisher (2), and the usual assortment of heron, egret, anhinga, and cormorant.
At Green Cay Saturday, the American and least bitterns both continue to be conspicuous. Both Wako and Green Cay have had American bittern out in the open, and Saturday was no different. Also, sora continue in extremely large numbers at Green Cay - I counted at least 11. Marsh wren, red-shouldered hawk, painted bunting, palm, yellow rumped, and pine warblers, blue-grey gnatcatchers, eastern phoebe, cardinals, osprey, and several roseated spoonbills continue at Green Cay. A lovely juvie northern harrier is easily spotted throughout the wetland area - moving from tree perch to tree perch, occasionally getting into tussles with the red-shoulder hawk who chases it off. It has made some very nice close passes right over the boardwalk, to the delight of photographers. The first 27 thumbnails of my linked gallery below are from Saturday's shooting.
