Agree w/ J. Boyd and add that the differences in winter plumage of the two types are fairly subtle and not well illustrated in most guides. Dunn and Garrett's Peterson series A Field Guide to Warblers of North America has more detail. Most westerns seem have distinct contrast between yellow undertail coverts and white belly, and a browner overall tone to upperparts. There was what I considered a good Eastern at Richardson Park W.M. for two winters, but even then in certain lighting conditions it was not easy to id.
