I never said Vince's hearing a Eastern Whip-poor-will was controversial. Quite the contrary. I applaud and admire the fact that he uses auditory means to supplement sight. You need not defend him to me.

Vince's exact words were : "...However, I count all birds that I can identify by call so thus, this bird was added to my list."

Note that Vince didn't say that he counts birds by sound that ONLY habitat and time of year are spot on. He said ALL (emphasis added) birds.

I don't agree that the Red-eyed vireo "hearing" by me and "sighting" by the female biologist in the tree are controversial. Unusual, a curiosity, maybe even exciting. But controversial no. And who ordains that all these birds should all be wintering in the Amazon Basin? Maybe most are, maybe the majority are, and maybe a few with wings chose or got trapped here and didn't fly all the way.

When I studied science all my teachers (chemistry, botany, biology) instructed me to keep an open mind which is why I went to the Wheatear at ENP, the Grebes at Green Cay, and all of the other unusual sightings that pop up here. I believe that to be the worth of the TAS board.

Last year and again this year we discovered a bobcat at Hoechoka Hammock in the HEART of Parkland two blocks from University Drive and Holmberg Road. I say that was interesting. Others said that it was controversial. So we photographed it. End of story.

Can't we just post all reports and let the reader judge them as worthy of respect or not?
