A kayak trip along the Turner River this past Friday (1-21-11) revealed several juvenile little blue herons, squabbling groups of common moorhen, and a pair of pied billed grebes. A great egret flew in for a spot of fishing, but left immediately due to our presence. A few anhinga and cormorants were observed to fly over. An osprey nest was visible from the river with female sitting inside. The male brought her a fish while she fussed. Slowing down at a bend in the river allowed a glimpse at a mixed flock of warblers - blue-gray gnatcatchers, a red-eyed vireo, several nortehrn parula, quite a few palm warblers, and surprisingly (to me) a small group of tufted titmice, a species I have only ever seen outside of Florida. A suspected least flycatcher was also observed (though I am open to a second opinion on that) in addition to a downy woodpecker. Leaving for the night a pair of red-shouldered hawks shared an intimate moment with the silent gliders on the water.
