Peak reproductive activity for the Blue Land Crab occurs during full moons in summer. The spawning season (and female migration to ocean) lasts from June to December, peaking in October and November. After mating, an adult female lays her eggs but carries the egg mass beneath her body for approximately 2 weeks prior to migrating to the ocean and releasing the eggs into shallow inshore waters.
Where crabs are abundant, this migration causes quite a mess as they try and cross highways on the way to the beach. In Guantanamo the crabs cause a mess because the vultures are attracted to all the carnage on the roads causing serious problems for aircraft take off and landings.
