Of course, the FWC may be a dollar short and a few thousand days late on this one. Back in the 60's and 70's I got to go with my dad looking for these crabs in the Cutler area. There were many fewer houses east of Old Cutler Rd back then, and unbelievable numbers of crabs. I remember seeing masses of crabs, with some crawling up fences, and literally covering the ground for acres. The noise from the crabs walking was like something out of a horror movie. A spectacle to say the least. Some people would take garbage cans and herd the crabs into the cans with brooms, taking home hundreds of crabs. My dad would only take large males, and never more than a couple dozens. I think uncontrolled taking, and especially the loss of most of their habitat, has permanently decreased their population.
