I went to Chekika this morning pre sunrise to listen for King Rail and whatever else. The mosquitoes and flies were bad but not unbearable. I saw a small bat flying around the gate to the entrance to the old campground. It flew around a good while before dawn and then it disappeared into a telephone pole. I found a really small hole in the poll, so I'm guessing it went in there.

Soon after watching the bat disappear I began to hear frogs and birds. There were many Common Nighthawk in the area flying and calling. I also heard Whip-poor-will calling from the campground and a clump of trees to the east. I heard plenty of calls I didn't recognize, but I finally heard at least four King Rails calling from different areas fairly close by.

I didn't see anything unexpected after the sun came up. I drove the main road both directions to the gates. Saw a couple of Red-shouldered Hawks and a few Meadowlarks so I will be back to get those for Bird A Day.

The other day while looking around Black Point I found many Blue Land Crabs. I don't recall ever seeing these critters in great numbers. There were dozens that I could easily see and holes that could have held dozens more.
