Hello All:

I would like to introduce myself as a new member of TAS. My name is Jeff Trotta, and I live in Fort Lauderdale, but have lived in southern Florida since the late 1940's. I am a canoeist and scuba diver, and have a keen interest in Florida avifauna. However, I have not attained the skill level of the birders on this board. Without being forward, I want to report a pair of white-tailed kites, that I observed at 6:00 p.m. Monday on the road that leads to Rotenberger/Holely off of highway 27. The kites were on the lower tension wires about 300 yards east of the palms. I was fortunate enough to glass one of them for about 20 minutes with my new 10 x 42 Vortex Vipers. I ran the road to the end and found a nice cottonmouth about 3 feet long. Near sundown I saw five black-necked stilts at the pumping station at the very end of the road. On the way out after dark, I came across five brown water snakes (Nerodia taxispilota) and some small, unidentified ouls, either screech or burrowing, in the headlights. I hope to get a chance to bird with you all in the near future. Thanks for keeping this wonderful organization running so strongly over these many years. Jeff
