The preferred alpha code used by the Bird Banding Lab in Patuxent, MD is WTKI. Vince's URL is access to the alpha codes in current use by the BBL. Since some of the codes are exceptions to the "formula," you may have to scan the list to find particular birds.

The following is another good URL for alpha codes and gives options to find the birds taxonomically or alphabetically. It also explains some of the inconsistencies of alpha codes and includes the 6-letter codes used for scientific names. White-tailed Kite is WTKI and ELALEU (scientific code) in this list.
