Nice choice, but I would strongly consider the Canon 100-400 f4.5. The lens you chose is tack sharp and very quick to focus, but you will probably wish you were able to zoom out from time to time.
And I don't think the image quality of the 100-400 is significantly less than the 400 fixed.
Nikon now has some really good digital SLR cameras, but I think there is a reason, that by far, the majority of Nature Photographers us Canon equipment.
