I don't know a whole lot about these birds, but something is distressing it ( I do have birds as pets as well and I know they can get quite upset). Could it be looking for its young or a mate? Could the mate or young have been killed or taken? You may want to check for nests.
Perhaps one of the experts on this board can help Carolyn out?
I am pretty sure it is illegal to shoot this bird.
