I have been planning a trip to Ft. Desoto for several month now and finally
made it up there last Friday and Saturday for some birding and photography. I
drove up earlier than I had expected because there had been a Thick-billed Vireo
reported Thursday. I spent the early part of Friday morning looking for that
bird along with about 20 others. Around 8:30 am someone spotted what they
thought was the bird seen the day before. I took several photos of it hoping,
only to be disappointed. Oh, well... I missed the one in Ft. Lauderdale last
year also trying 4 times to find it.
I ran into Bryant Robert while there and he showed me around a little bit and
I met Cosmo a local birder and birded the hammock on east beach.
Morning migrant list:
Prairie
Parula
Chestnut-sided
Bay-breasted
Hooded
Magnolia
Black and White
Black-throated Blue
Palm
Pine
Ovenbird
Common Yellow-throat
Blackburnian
Tennessee
Red Start
Indigo Bunting
Painted Bunting
at Noon I found a room for the night and slept for an hour or so and went back
to photograph shorebirds on North Beach.
It was amazing how close I was able to get to the subjects.
Saturday I spent the morning doing the photographer thing with other
photographers from around the country. It was a lot of fun for me and I still
picked up a couple of year birds at the same time. I learned a few things and
got to put names and faces together. The group of photographers are apart of

On my way back home I stopped at a location know to have Red-Cockated
Woodpeckers and Brown-headed Nuthatches. The area had burned recently. I'm not
sure if it was an intentional controlled burn or not, but I didn't see a Red-Cockated
Woodpecker. I do believe that I heard one and I did see a Brown-headed Nuthatch.
After that I drove through Loop Rd. and found a Chipping Sparrow and a few
Palms.
I am posting most of my better photos on my website

But here are a couple for the BB:
White-eyed Vireo - thought to be a Thick-billed Vireo
Piping Plover
Terns, Gulls, Skimmers and Photographers
Brown-headed Nuthatch
Chipping Sparrow - I think?
