Since moving here in Dec, I have been trying to locate reliable sites for the South Fl specialities (mostly exotics) to help some out of state friends when they visit. Below is the summary of those efforts: (this is turning out fairly long so I will make the posts by species).

Purple Swamphen
Chapel Trail Nature Preserve
Nov 9, 2013, 10am, no birds found 1 hour search
Dec 14, 2013 10:30, 3 birds found half hour search

City Furniture Wetlands
Nov 10, 2013 12pm, 3 birds found, seen from car
Dec 14, 2013 2pm, 3 birds found, had to park and walk, they were found in the north end of the pond again.

Silver Lakes North Park
Dec 14, 2013 11pm, 0 birds found (1 hour search). This is a big area but it doesn't seem like it is the preferred habitat.

Southeast Regional Library
Dec 14, 2013, area appears to be permanently closed. You can stand at the front of the pond but it is limited viewing

Markham Park. park at the nature trail (left as you enter the park) then walk west tot he end of the nature trail, over the canal and up the dyke. There appears to be miles of habitat here. We saw the birds in the first 150 yards from on top of the dyke. (scope would be nice but not absolutely necessary)
Jan 4, 2014, 11:30 4 birds seen

Preferred habitat seems to be the thick grass/reeds growing in the water where there is a thick layer of vegetation floating on top of the water.
