This morning Trey, Rock Jetty and I went to Black Point in hopes of relocating the flycatcher Trey and I saw on Saturday. Shortly after arriving we were joined by Larry Manfredi. We didn't see anything on the way out, so we scanned the end of the jetty looking for Paul's Buffleheads. We saw some Horned Grebes and Red-breasted Mergansers, bot no Buffleheads. But, we did see many crab trap floats, which the fishermen paint in different colors to distinguish their traps from the competition. I saw a couple belonging from an old friend of mine that, coincidently, paints Buffleheads on his floats. On the way back, and at about the same time and location as Saturday, we spotted the flycatcher. We were seeing it on the near side of the channel, and although it was close, it didn't give us clear views of it undertail. But, we did get enough looks that unless Trey's photos show otherwise, it's a Brown-crested Flycatcher and not Ash-throated. The bird flew across the channel to the south and disappeared, without ever calling once. I'm sure Trey will correct me if the photos show something we missed. It's still a pretty good bird, and we should look closely at any Myairchus just to be sure.
