Went to Lake Worth Beach this Saturday looking for that beautiful Common Eider and found it all right. It was floating, preening, diving and returning to the surface with some sea snacks. It was actually floating about 8-10 ft away from a group of surfers! Caught on camera.
Had 28 LEAST SCAUPS flying in 2 groups of 14 each.
Northern Gannets were present - must have seen a few dozen of them. What was different that day was that I saw more immatures migrating than adults. In previous days, adults were the majority with very few immatures. Not this Saturday. They came really close to the end of the pier. I added a shot of them within the shot of 4 adults I posted a few days back.
There were numerous Royal Tern, Laughing Gulls. A couple of Ruddy Turnstone, and a small group of Sandwich Terns flying south.

Now on the non-fictional BLACK TERN report & record... As soon as I entered the gate to enter the Lake Worth Pier I saw a tern flying and hovering about the crazy waves we were having this past saturday with the wind storms. I had never seen a Black Tern right on the ocean before and let alone this time of the year. I do see them from July-September around the flooded fields in Belle Glade. Maybe this is a good find. Glad I didn't label it Bridled or Sooty because there would have been another faux-pas.
Has anyone seen them at the beach before? If so, how often? I'm curious.
