I hit Green Cay and Arthur Marshall Refuge today, and both places are fairly hopping.
At Green Cay, I started in the parking lot with an odd tiny dark bird making a very distinctive call - when I described the bird and the call, several other birders agreed it sounded like an eastern wood peewee - looking that up when I got home, I'd agree that seems to be what it was - I just didn't get a shot of him - I had just parked, was getting my camera out of the trunk, hadn't even put the hood on, and tried to snap a few shots but failed to get anything. Also in the parking lot: a house wren - which I did manage an ID shot of, northern parulas, pine warblers, palm warblers, BG gnatcatchers galore. Ruby-throated hummingbird near the entrance, painted buntings, common yellowthroats also. Lots of yellow-throated warblers, several black and whites. The purple swamphens continue to be on easy display - family of at least 6 that I found this time. Sora are starting to populate. Lots of raptor activity - kestrel, merlin, northern harrier, and red-shouldered hawks.
At Arthur Marshall, I started on the cypress trail, where I got more warblers, and then a strange call I've never heard drew me to a dark brown and orange colored bird - very loud and fast call. I took photos of it to ID, and it was a Carolina wren - first-time bird for me. At the large-vehicle parking lot, there looked to be a possible red-headed woodpecker inside a hole in the telephone pole, but it just flashed its head once or twice and wouldn't come out for me. Along the marsh trails, lots of eastern phoebes, common yellowthroats, and palm warblers. A large group of black-headed parakeets flew over - about 7 of them. Neat day - and always love getting to spot a new bird; the Carolina wren was it for this day.
