It's something I just never thought of, despite the logic. Actually, it's something I've also been seeing more and more with weather coverage - only recently have tornado reports been including 'debris balls' to help determine a ground-touching tornado, which the hook echo alone may not indicate. I never really thought about bird migration being tracked by radar until I saw sites like BadBirdz. My novice level of understanding is that I haven't studied the radar extensively enough to distinguish between light rain, heavy moisture, bugs, birds, dust, etc - I read the advice on what to look for, and it's helping me sometimes see those light blue donut-shaped returns that swarm then all dwindle down to a point and disappear as being likely to be birds.
