I just noticed someone had asked for directions to the site of an old post of mine - the horse farm at the west end of Avocado Dr. (SW 296th St.) in Homestead that is hosting three species of cowbirds. Directions are at the bottom. Today there were at least 7 Bronzed Cowbirds and 6 Shiny Cowbirds, which has been typical lately. They are easy to see in the evening - I usually pass by at 6ish on my way home from work. Check the wires and road shoulders, the lawn in the horse corral area, the weedy field just west of the horses, and especially the weedy old raised row-crop field across the road to the south east of the horses. Males Bronzeds can often be seen doing their hovering display, betraying the location of feeding females hidden among the weeds.

Can someone clarify the status of Bronzeds in south Florida for me - I was under the impression they didn't breed within about 900 miles or so of here. If these guys aren't breeding I'd be awful surprised. Three breeding species of cowbird is enough to drive the good honest nest-building birds in the area to drink.

Directions:
Avocado meets US1 south of Biscayne Dr. (288th St.). Follow it west about 5 miles almost to where it ends at 217. The horse farm is on the left (south) side of the road.
