At 29th Street, Miami Beach, this morning about 8:30, I watched for several minutes a bird that looked like a small penguin. It was in the water right at the shore, diving smoothly through small waves, streaking very fast underwater, constantly moving.
The gulls onshore apparently did not like it. Several dive-bombed it.
It was black with white highlights, a distinctive thick beak, and about the size of a ring-billed gull, maybe a little larger.
After several minutes of back and forth between two rock jetties, it swam south and I lost sight of it.
I am at that spot on the beach every morning, for years, and have never seen a bird like it.
