I thought this was interesting. Haven't read anything in recent literature about chimney swifts nesting this far south. Please comment on this for any more insight. Yesterday a caretaker of a house at Ocean Reef Club dropped off 2 chimney swift chicks (approx 7-10 days old) to the wild bird center in Tavernier. The homeowner apparently wanted them gone. The homeowners were contacted and told that the best chance of survivial for the chicks would be to return them. They agreed and I went up there this morning along with the rehabber from the bird center. Sadly, the caretaker had scraped the nests off the sides of the chimney. Apparently there were a number of nests and more chicks which I do not know the fate of. Luckily there was a nice lip on the inside of the chimney about 6 feet up that we placed the chicks back on. We did not observe any adults in the area but since it had been less than 24 hours we figured this was their best chance for survival.
