Justin - The following is a great article written by Cameron Cox. He covers the basics of Least, Semipalmated and Western Sandpiper identification. There's a lot of information to absorb from the article but Cameron addresses how to use general impressions of the birds for identification. Sometimes this is all we have to work with and fall is a great time to compare the 3 species. There are other articles (and books) that help separate Western and Semipalmated Sandpipers. This can be tricky, since they both have webbing between their toes and there is bill size overlap, depending on which breeding population you are observing.
