I agree with you that it's a very unseasonal date. However, in over 3 years of avid birding i am beginning to realize that most birds like the American Bittern fly north but apparently NOT ALL. On June 8th, i went for a 4 mile walk at Arthur Marshall Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge and on my way back i saw the single American Bittern flying right over the waters heading south on the park. I am thinking that this very secretive bird might be nesting very quietly in the tree islands region of the park.
However, I actually just checked the park's bird list brochure and according to it, they do not breed in the park and it is UNUSUAL to see them - i guess i am a lucky man at the right place and at the right time. Throughout the years i have seen of them flying around the park. I enjoy seeing its somewhat slow and straight flight pattern with its brown wings gently beating.Let me know if you have further questions.
