At first I thought it was a Red-breasted Merganser, but after a long look at it, about 20 mins, Davis and I ruled out Red-breasted and agreed on Common Merganser. We did get really good look at the field marks and their for said a Common Merganser.

Here at the Deering Estate we have about 8 Common Mergansers hanging around. They don't hang around together, there usually in pairs of two. They have been here for about a week now.



: Your "Common Merganser" on Key Biscayne was much more likely a Red-breasted Merganser, common here in winter in coastal waters. I'm still looking for my first Common Merganser in Florida.

: : What a great birding day it was today. Davis Noble, from Boston and I went to A.D. Barnes Park and Crandon Park, since we could not go on the Audubon trip. We where looking for wilson plovers, but we could find any. Davis, did get a short tail hawk as a life bird today.

: : In total we saw 54 bird species. It was a great day for us. Our day ended at 12:30pm, because Davis had to catch a plain at 3pm. We had a great.
