Badly back-lit image. This past week, I've seen both Eastern Wood-Pewees and, on two other occasions, an Empid that was either a Willow or an Alder Flycatcher. This morning while sitting in my "Fake Hammock" in the West Miramar wetlands near our home, I heard the unmistakable "Whit!" call of a Willow Flycatcher. I located this one and watched it call several times. Though it is almost the same size as a wood-pewee, and has wing bars and an indistinct eye ring, note the shorter wings and the heavy, broad bill that help set it apart from the pewee. It also was quite active, flicking its tail on occasion, and foraged within a limited area in and under the canopy, sometimes hover-gleaning like a kinglet or some warblers.
