Despite the light rain, I stopped to check out the service road at Matheson this morning. I started out birding with an umbrella, and found out it's hard to hold a camera, binoculars, AND an umbrella while trying to photograph warblers.
First bird was a Kentucky Warbler about 60 feet past the gate. I heard it before ever seeing it. There were other birds in the area, but after a couple of photos I moved on so as not to spook it too much. There were Waterthrushes, Worm-eatings and Redstarts farther down, but the best bird was a female Cerulean Warbler past the area where the Thick-billed Vireo was at. After the hammock opens up, go past the arch formed by the trees over the road. The Cerulean was feeding on the north side of the road. It moved around a lot! Tough to get a good photo, at least for a lousy photographer like me.
I should have stayed longer, but I was dressed for work and the heat was becoming a problem. I should bring a change of clothes when I do this. The migrants are definitely coming through. Even I could find some today!
